No matter your excuse/age/relationship with the host and/or hostess, it is always good manners to bring a small gift of thanks. I know some would say "Well I am a student!" or "I am a starving artist" or "It's one of my best friends, I shouldn't need to bring something!" - but at the end of the day, it shows your thanks. It can be something small, homemade, freshly baked, thoughtful or just a "I went apple picking last week and brought some over as a small thank you". It is always welcomed and received well. So just do it.

Some of my favourite things to bring as host/hostess gifts are homemade items (which are always budget friendly): fresh salsa, a spring bulb planted in a thrift store vase, some flowers from my garden, or a loaf of fresh baked banana bread.

Really crafty? Try making your own soy candles for gifts - add some jazzy fabric and you are ready to rock!

Not into doing that sort of thing? A bottle of wine is always grand (and can be consumed later than night if it goes late!).
